The Birthday of Runet

April, 7th marks a significant date for all users of the Russian–speaking Internet - the birthday of Runet (RuNet). On this day in 1994, the first website registered with the domain name ".RU" appeared in the world. It was entered into the international database of national top-level domains, assigned to Russia.

The emergence of the root national domain marked the beginning of the state identity of Russia on the global Internet. The widely used term RUNET comes from the designation of Russia (RU) in the table of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and abbreviations from the word Network (Net).

In 2009 , another domain appeared in Russia – .рф. This is the first domain on the world Wide web that uses only Cyrillic when writing. Initially, registration in this zone was open only to government agencies and trademarks. A year later, registration was made open to everyone.

Currently, the .RU domain continues to be one of the largest top-level domains in the world, and the number of Runet users is constantly growing from year to year.
