Ruslan Kirichek was appointed Rector of SPbSUT

Ruslan Valentinovich Kirichek – new Rector of The Bonch-Bruevich Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications. The decision on his appointment was made by the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation.

Ruslan Kirichek received the “keys to the University” at the first meeting of the administration in 2023, which took place on January 9.

He greeted his colleagues, thanked them for their trust and noted that he would work as Rector with "maximum responsibility" in order to "increase the glory of Bonch."

Ruslan Kirichek was born in 1982 in the city of Tartu in the family of a soldier and a doctor. Ruslan Kirichek studied at the St Petersburg Suvorov Military School in grades 9-11. He entered the Pushkin Higher Military School of Air Defense Radio Electronics after St Petersburg Suvorov Military School. In parallel with studying at a military university, he entered the Faculty of Evening and Distance Learning of SPbSUT.

He graduated from the Military Space Academy with a gold medal in the specialty "Computers, Systems, Complexes and Networks" and was assigned to military service at the command post of the 6th Air Force and Air Defense Army at the center of automated control systems (Leningrad region) in 2004. Graduated from SPbSUT with honors in the specialty "Communication Networks and Switching Systems" in 2007.

Entered PhD programme of SPbSUT with a direction “Networks and Switching Systems” , began working at the Department of Communication Networks as a software engineer. He completed his army service with the rank of captain and was hired as a design engineer at Giprosvyaz-SPb in the Department of Advanced Development. Participated in the development of the projects "Electronic Chechnya" and "Ust-Luga – the city of the future".

He defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Research of the Influence of Ultrashort Electromagnetic Pulses on the Process of Data Transmission in Ethernet networks", headed the laboratory of the Internet of Things at SPbSUT in 2012. Ruslan Kirichek moved to the main job at SPbSUT as an Associate Professor of the Department of Communication Networks and Data Transmission in 2014.

He defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Development and Research of a Complex of Models and Methods for Flying Sensor Networks", was elected professor of the department in 2018. In 2020, during the elections, he was appointed to the post of Head of the Department of Software Engineering and Computer Engineering.

Ruslan Kirichek conducts active teaching and research activities at SPbSUT, presenting the results of his work in the form of international standards, recommendations, as well as developments that are important for the Telecommunications industry. He is the Head of the group for the development of standards on the Internet of Things, its applications and identification systems 11 of the research commission "Alarm requirements, Protocols, Testing Specifications and the Fight Against Counterfeit Products" of the standardization sector of the International Telecommunication Union (Q12/11). Ruslan Kirichek is a certified expert on international standardization of Rosstandart.

More than 20 research and development projects were carried out for a total amount of more than 200 million rubles under the leadership of Ruslan Kirichek, which were financed by the Grant Fund of the President of the Russian Federation, Rostelecom and other departments.

He was awarded the Lomonosov medal "For merits in scientific activity", has gratitude from the Committee for Science and Higher Education, the Committee for Informatization and Communications of St Petersburg, the standardization sector of the International Telecommunication Union. Ruslan Kirichek awarded a letter of appreciation from the Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation "For merits in the development of communications, information technology and mass communications " in  2021.

Ruslan Kirichek is the author of more than 450 scientific publications in Russian and foreign publications. Hirsch index RSCI 27. Hirsch index SCOPUS 19.

Professional interests: Internet of Things, Wireless Sensor Networks, Flying Networks, Network Security, Protection from Intentional Electromagnetic Influences, Testing of Telecommunications Networks and Devices, Identification Based on the Architecture of Digital Objects, Machine Learning for Embedded Electronics.

Interests: mountain biking, smart device development, fishing.

Courses taught: Software Architecture for Smart Sustainable Cities, Software Design and Simulation of Wireless Sensor Networks, Fundamentals of Research Activities, Computer Hardware, Computer Engineering, Introduction to Software Engineering.

Ruslan Kirichek replaced Georgiy Mashkov, who served as Acting Rector of SPbSUT from March to December 2022.
