The 80th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad is celebrated on February 2, 2023.

The Battle of Stalingrad was a turning point and one of the most important and major battles during the Great Patriotic War.The fierce confrontation along the length of the front from the banks of the Don and Volga rivers lasted 200 days and ended with the complete victory of the Soviet troops. The defensive phase of the operation lasted until November 18, 1942, and the offensive began on November 19. This battle surpassed all the previous ones in world history. Over 2 million people participated from both side.

The significance of the Battle of Stalingrad is a common turning point in the course of the entire Second World War. The enemy lost hundreds of thousands of experienced soldiers and officers, was forced to retreat from the North Caucasus, leave Stavropol, Kuban, Rostov-on-Don.des. 98% of the buildings in the city were burned and destroyed. The defeat of the Fascist bloc at Stalingrad undermined the credibility of Germany on the part of its allies. Now it has become clear to the whole world that the USSR will not lose the war to Nazi Germany, but will continue to advance until the complete defeat of the Hitlerite bloc. This was the beginning of the end for the Nazi regime.

The victory at Stalingrad was the result of the indomitable fortitude, courage and mass heroism of the Soviet troops. For the military distinctions shown during the Battle of Stalingrad, 44 formations and units were awarded honorary titles, 55 were awarded orders, 183 were transformed into guards. Tens of thousands of soldiers and officers were honored with government awards. 112 of the most distinguished soldiers became Heroes of the Soviet Union. The medal "For the Defense of Stalingrad", which was awarded to more than 700 thousand participants of the battle, was established on December 22, 1942, even before the end of the battle.

Stalingrad was named a hero city in the order of the Commander-in-Chief on May 1, 1945. The hero City was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal on May 8, 1965 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.

The city has over 200 historical sites associated with its heroic past. The memorial ensemble "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" on Mamayev Kurgan, the House of Soldiers' Glory (Pavlov's House) and others are among them. The Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum was opened in 1982.

SPbSUT held a action "Voices of Stalingrad" in memory of the incredible courage and perseverance of the heroes who won an important victory. Students and employees of SPbSUT read excerpts from the collection "Communication in Stalingrad during the Great Patriotic War". The collection was prepared and published by The A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications.

The exhibition "Fortress of steel, hearts and fire" is organized by the SPbSUT Museum and the scientific and technical library in the lobby of the first floor of the first building of the University.
