Journey to the Middle Ages: students in Vyborg

28 november 2022

Students living in dormitories of SPbSUT, as part of their acquaintance with the suburbs of St Petersburg, visited the excursion "Medieval Vyborg" on November 19. Head of the Department for Educational Work Sergey Morozov accompanied the students.

Vyborg is the only city in the Leningrad Region that has the status of a historical settlement. The city is the center of historical monuments – there are more than 300 .There are only two places in Russia where you can feel the atmosphere of medieval Europe - Vyborg and Kaliningrad.

The students saw the most important sights in one day. The travelers visited a unique example of park art– the Monrepos Park. Its heyday is associated with the name of the president of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences Ludwig Heinrich Nicolai, who acquired the estate in 1788. Acquaintance with the architecture of the park began at the first steps with the passage of the Monrepos Gate.

The students appreciated the variety of architectural and natural masterpieces presented throughout the park – this is the Manor House, the Hermit's Hut, the Temple of Neptune, Ludwigstein Island and the "Grotto of Desires". It is believed that if you make a wish inside the grotto, it will surely come true. Our students did just that and most likely decided to pass the session with “good” and “excellent”. And next to the entrance to the grotto, they saw the old man Väinemeinen playing the ancient Karelian musical instrument - the kantele.

A walk through the old city took place in the afternoon. The students saw the Tower and Town Hall Square, the House of the Merchants' Guild of the Holy Spirit, the Citizen's House, the Clock Tower, the Burgher's Manor, and the House on the Rock. All these places are an unusual building made of stones, and the roads here are laid out of granite paving stones. The students were taken to the Vyborg Castle on Zamkovy Island at the end of the tour.

Culture overload, a lot of positive emotions and excellent sunny weather gave students a lot of bright and unforgettable impressions for a long time.
