SPbSUT at the commemorative action "Siege light"

1 february 2022

On January 27th, SPbSUT students took part in the city memorial action "Siege Light", which took place on the Cathedral Square of the Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint-Petersburg. The action dedicated to the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade was held for the fifth time.

The participants lined up in the form of a torn ring and held up the lights of lanterns, symbolizing the 900 days and nights of the siege of Leningrad. A minute of silence was declared in memory of the victims and a gun salvo was fired.

The siege of Leningrad began on September 8th, 1941. Since autumn, five attempts have been made to break the blockade, but only the sixth was successful - Operation Iskra, thanks to which the besieged city received land communication with the mainland and was saved from starvation. The blockade of the Red Army was completely lifted only a year later, on January 27, 1944. According to various sources, from 600 thousand to 1.5 million residents of the city died during the siege.

Eternal glory and memory to the defenders and residents of besieged Leningrad!
