SUT graduates have created a system that saves baggage from loss

bagazh600The RFID tagging system for airport baggage was developed by the company PCT-Invent. For six months, graduates of SUT together with specialists from other technical universities of St. Petersburg worked on the project. Testing of the system at the large Russian airport will begin in the first quarter of 2019. It will provide an opportunity to quickly and cheaply find lost luggage.

RFID tags are integrated directly into the baggage tag. They contain information about the passenger, the characteristics of his baggage and data about where he came from and where he is going to. Each tag is assigned a unique identification code, which makes it possible to trace the movement of baggage from the time of registration until unloading onto the baggage carousel at the destination airport.

Special equipment and software is installed along the entire baggage transportation route, which collects information about its movement into a common database. It is assumed that the use of RFID tags by airports and airlines will provide an opportunity to quickly and cost-effectively return lost baggage to passengers, as well as to reduce the number of cases of its loss.

Now the company is already negotiating with the "two largest airports" of Russia. In the first quarter of 2019, the system will be tested at the trial area.

The average cost of equipping an airport with RFID baggage control system is about 10-50 million rubles. This does not include the cost of the RFID tags themselves, modernization of the IT infrastructure and aircraft equipment.
